We have been drag racing for over 50 years and like you, have had the need to build our own parts and components from time to time while we waited for the aftermarket parts guys to catch up. Today, the high performance aftermarket space is rich with great solutions that help us to go quicker, stop faster and be more consistent. But on any given day at any drag strip, you’ll still find hand-built, home grown solutions on even the most professionally built and well sponsored racecars. In fact, you will see this type of creative competitiveness across all forms of motor sports.
It’s this kind of necessity and competition that drives us to innovate and it’s this drive that pushed Carnivore Performance to create the NITROUSAURUS-X nitrous oxide pressure control system. We all know nitrous oxide is one of the most popular and cost effective power adders in drag racing. We also know that nitrous can be inconsistent at times due to changes in bottle temperature and pressure. And as you know, inconsistency wreaks havoc on bracket, index and heads-up racing where the difference between winner and runner-up can be one thousandth of a second (and quite a few dollars too).
Like every other drag racer wanting to use nitrous, we struggled with keeping the bottle pressure at around 950 PSI (considered the sweet spot by most manufacturers). We tried heating blankets, bottle covers, wet rags, ice, propane torch (ok, we actually didn’t try this one but saw others doing it, yikes!). We’ve seen racers using “hot boxes” and water tanks – all sorts of other half-baked solutions. The bottom line, every one of those solutions introduces inconsistency into your nitrous oxide tune-up.
Bottle pressure too low and you end up rich and your car will lay down at the top end. Bottle pressure too high and you’ll end up lean and now having to worry about detonation and or serious engine damage. In fact, if the pressure gets really high, your solenoids will quick working and then there’s no nitrous and no win light.
At the end of the day, we can’t help you cut a better light or improve the traction at the track, but we can give you one less thing to worry about when tuning your nitrous car.
